I’ve been following Met Gala fashion for several years, but last night was the first time I watched the live streaming on Vogue.com. Even putting aside the fact that I was vicariously embarrassed for both Billy and Hilary on multiple occasions, I was really disappointed. The lack of effort that probably 75 percent of the attendees put into looking “punk” was such a letdown; it had the potential to be so much fun!
Fortunately, among the misses, there were a few red carpet hits. Here’s my breakdown of the best dressed:
Beauties in Black
From left to right: Carey Mulligan stunned in a simple Balenciaga LBD; Cara Delevingne rocked a studded Burberry gown; and Dakota Fanning looked gorgeous in a Rodarte cut-out dress.
From left to right: Kerry Washington popped in a purple Vera Wang gown; Nicole Richie went for a full-on monochromatic look (down to the hair!) in her Topshop dress; and Kate Bosworth wore a Balmain dress I would kill for.
Left: Rooney Mara in Givenchy (can anyone rock a vampy lip better than her?); Ginnifer Goodwin looked fierce in Tory Burch (girl can seriously pull off a dramatic eye).
Jennifer Morrison, who wore a custom Donna Karan Atelier gown, looked totally badass with her killer faux-hawk.
Though they weren’t “best dressed” in my books, you have to give Madonna (in Givenchy) and SJP (in a Giles Deacon gown and Philip Treacy headdress) props for going all in.
I’ll be the first to admit I’m not a big Anne Hathaway fan when it comes to fashion. But last night, she looked downright hot. The blonde hair totally worked for me, and her vintage Valentino was both sexy and punk in its own way, without trying too hard or looking costume-ish.
