One down, a million to go! In case you were hiding under a rock—or, you know, watching football or something—the Golden Globes kicked off the 2014 awards show season last night. I was glued to the TV (and Twitter and Getty Images and E’s online live stream … ) from 4 p.m. on, taking in every red-carpet look I could possibly get my eye on. Overall, I felt like there were a few amazing looks, a handful of terrible looks and lot of she-looks-great-but-I’m-a-little-bored-with-it looks at the first show of the year.
As much as I adore red-carpet fashion, I always find myself thinking, “I could never pull these looks off.” But last night, there were a ton of ensembles that could easily translate to regular-girl, everyday outfits that anyone could wear, and for a whole lot less. Here are three of my favorite red-carpet-to-real-world looks from the 2014 Golden Globes:
Emma Watson in Dior
When the first shots of Emma Watson rolled in last night, I thought her look was a bit of a snooze—until I saw the major cutout and surprise pants she had waiting in the back! I never thought I could be a dress-and-pants fan, but Emma pulled off the style so effortlessly, making it look both polished and edgy at the same time. Recreate the look yourself with an above- or below-the-knee red-hot dress, a pair of sleek leggings, basic black pumps, ladylike jewels and barely-there makeup.
Naomi Watts in Tom Ford
Naomi Watts is one of those women who looks stunning at every awards show or red carpet appearance, and last night was definitely no exception. In fact, I think this slinky Tom Ford gown could be one of her best looks ever. Nail her easy-glam look with a silver-and-gold combo, mixing a simple sequin dress with glitzy jewelry, glamazon heels, a croc-skin clutch and nude lips.
Margot Robbie in Gucci
You may not know her now, but as one of the stars of “The Wolf of Wall Street,” you’ll be seeing a lot of budding starlet Margot Robbie throughout the awards show season. And if last night was any indication, that won’t be a bad thing. Get her sleek-and-sexy look with a tailored white sheath dress, emerald-and-rhinestone jewels, a statement heel, basic black accessories and some major brows.
These stars definitely weren’t the only ones who caught my eye—in both good and bad ways—last night. Olivia Wilde showed everyone everywhere how to do red-carpet maternity style, and Cate Blanchett was my ultimate best dressed (naturally) with a high-neck lace Armani Couture gown. Sadly, some of my favorite stars were a total disappointment, including Jennifer Lawrence, Sandra Bullock and Allison Williams. But that’s another great thing about awards show season: Everyone has a chance to redeem themselves!
Who made your best- and worst-dressed list at last night’s Golden Globes?
