Fashion Week Favorites, Part 1: NYFW Spring ’15

How this happened, I’m not quite sure, but we’re already halfway through the Spring ’15 season of New York Fashion Week. For the last four days in a row, I’ve been tuning in to as many live streams as possible and waiting, poised and ready, to pin every pretty outfit I see walking down the runway (check out a full list of my favorites from this season here!). And even though there are still four days of stunning spring style left to play out, I’ve already noticed a few trends throughout the first half of the shows. Check out a few of my faves:

Wow-Worthy Whites

Clockwise from top left: Dion Lee, Cushnie et Ochs, Honor, Ralph Rucci, Porsche Design and BCBG Max Azria

Summer, winter, spring, fall. I don’t care what season it is: All-white outfits are super chic. They’re also ruling the runways this year at NYFW, with everything from polished dresses and plunging jumpsuits to floaty skirts and sleek separates making an awe-inspiring appearance.

Outfit-Making Coats

Clockwise from top left: Porsche Design, Christian Siriano, Trina Turk, Victoria Beckham, Josie Natori and Rebecca Taylor

Who needs a stunning ensemble when you can simply throw on a spring coat like one of these, head out the door and be the most fashionable girl in sight?

Fun + Flirty Embellishments

Whether it’s candy-dot beads like those at DKNY and Honor or fringe and feathers at practically every other show, not-your-average embellishments are making their way into spring (and make a lack of accessorizing totally OK).

Va-Va-Voom Skirts

fashion, style, spring, spring style, spring fashion, fashion week, nyfw, new york fashion week, spring 15 fashion week, new york fashion week spring 15, dress, spring dress, voluminous skirt, voluminous dress, DKNY, Monique Lhuillier, Kate Spade New York, Christian Siriano

Airy midi skirts and flouncy minis will never go out of style, but next spring is all about the voluminous skirt, whether it hits above the knee in a stunning watercolor print or all the way down to your ankle in a delicate lacy overlay.

What are some of your favorite looks and trends from the first half of Spring ’15 Fashion Week?

Introducing: The Warby Parker Fall ’14 Collection

It’s one of my favorite times of the year again! And no, I’m not talking about fall. I’m talking about New York Fashion Week, where all of my most-adored designer brands will be showing off their latest and greatest collections for the Spring ’15 season!

You know who’s also showing off a new collection? Everyone’s go-to glasses brand, Warby Parker, who debuted its Fall 2014 collection just this morning. Featuring nine new shapes in a number of different shades—including Crystal (for a more modern look), Striped Pacific (for a rich, sophisticated effect) and Petal Tortoise (for a soft, earthy feel)—the collection has a lot to offer in terms of great style.

Available online and in Warby Parker stores and showrooms, you can pick up pieces from the new collection today (and starting from just $95!).

To celebrate the new collection, the folks at Warby Parker asked me to pick out a few of my favorite shapes and shades. And because no glasses can be chosen without an outfit in mind, I thought it would be fun to design a lineup of fall outfits around each pair. Take a look at my picks:

Sweater / J.Crew Ring / Marni Necklace / Ted Baker Booties / Maiden Lane Watch / Nixon Denim / Current/Elliot Lipstick / Lancome Clutch / BCBGeneration

I love the thought of rich hues like navy and deep charcoal grey for fall, especially when they’re paired in a casual-cool look that can go from a Saturday of shopping to a lazy Sunday brunch. Throw on a layered sweater with a pair of rugged-chic distressed denim, and dress it up with a statement bootie, crystal-drenched necklace and metallic clutch for a look you’ll never tire of all season long.

Practically made for the office, this black, white and gold color combo would look gorgeous when paired with the mod Crystal glasses. Add a ribbed sweater to a pair of tailored-but-loose trousers, then complete the look with luxe booties, a statement neckline, a simple shoulder bag and another touch of lucite for a modern look that will never get old.

For those fall weekends when comfort is key (but you don’t want to look lazy), throw on a printed dress and accessorize with heels, sweaters, bags and jewelry in earthy tones of tan, brown and burgundy (which couldn’t match the Woodgrain Tortoise shade any better!).

There’s something about tortoiseshell that feels so classically luxe to me, so naturally I would want to wear it with a look that reads feminine and polished. And what better way to achieve that than with a ladylike skirt, gilded accessories, leopard-print pumps and a swipe of deep red lipgloss?

September Want List

Happy September, everyone! I hope you all had a nice Labor Day weekend. I spent my days off shopping a little (though I didn’t pick up quite as much as I had hoped to), reorganizing our unruly closets and finally catching up on some reading. Though I would have loved to spend my days lying on the beach or at least hitting the pool, I think relaxing around the house was just what I needed to recharge for the busy month ahead.

And speaking of the month ahead, I’ve already got my eye on quite a few things I’d like to make mine in the coming weeks. Check them out below:

fall outfits, fall style, fall wardrobe, style, fashion, shopping, clothing, bag, work bag, suede bag, leather bag, banana republic, home, home decor, decor, furniture, bench, storage bench, boots, ankle boots, ankle booties, suede booties, club monaco, bracelet, jewelry, accessories, cuff, cuff bracelet, c. wonder, skirt, flared skirt, sweater, sweatshirt, uniqlo, jeans, denim, distressed denim, boyfriend jeans, madewell, shoes, flats, d'orsay flats, suede flats, black flats, lipstick, beauty, makeup, red lipstick, bobbi brown, dress, burgundy dress, fit and flare dress, nicole miller

Bag / Banana Republic Booties / Club Monaco Bench / Young Parisian Beds Bracelet / C. Wonder Skirt / Oasis Sweatshirt / Uniqlo Flats / Dee Keller Lipstick / Bobbi Brown, “Candied Red” Dress / Nicole Miller Denim / Madewell

I spotted this Banana Republic bag on Saturday while shopping and came this close to picking it up. Though I’m still weighing my fall bag options, this one is definitely high up on my list. Also high on that list: new fall shoes, including some suede ankle booties for casual weekends and a pair of D’Orsay flats for days at work when I don’t feel like wearing heels.

The flared skirt from Oasis and fit-and-flare dress from Nicole Miller would make good work pieces, too, while the cozy pullover and that pair of distressed boyfriend jeans would create a perfectly casual-chic number for one of the first crisp Saturdays of the season.

In the beauty department, I’m on the hunt for a slightly deeper shade of red, and my accessories collection is totally calling for that cobalt blue-accented cuff from C. Wonder. On the home front, we’re in search of a storage bench to put in the corner of our living room, and I adore the luxe feel of the velvet version above.

What’s on your must-have list for September?

Cute + Classy Collars

I have zero problem admitting that I often look to today’s teen stars for some major style inspiration. These little ladies include (but certainly aren’t limited to) Kiernan Shipka, Hailey Steinfeld, Elle Fanning and, of course, Chloe Grace Moretz. So when I saw Chloe sporting the most adorable Miu Miu shift dress the other day—complete with a nerdy-chic collar and beautiful sequin detailing—I immediately wanted a collared dress for myself.

fashion, style, celebrity style, celebrity fashion, red carpet style, red carpet fashion, chloe grace moretz, miu miu, collared dress

Naturally, I started my hunt for the perfect collared dress right away, where I quickly came across 12 dresses I’d love to add to my wardrobe (some budget friendly, and some a little out of my price range). Check them out:

Though the solid-hued dresses are perfect for any occasion, I’m really loving the bright, fun + eye-catching prints on the numbers from Peter Pilotto, True Decadence, Saloni and Mela Loves London—especially for the last few weeks of summer.

Do you already own some collared dresses? If not, would add one to your wardrobe?

Macarons + Makeup

Last night was a dream come true for me: Not only did I get to learn how to make macarons (one of my favorite sweet treats in existence!), but I also got to do it while celebrating a ton of amazing beauty products carried by QVC. I’m talking tarte eyeshadow palettes, philosophy lip glosses, Laura Geller blushes and bareMinerals lip colors, just to name a few.

And let’s not forget about the macarons. The class, which took place at the Manhattan Sur La Table and was led by the amazing Chef Cameca Bacchus, was super informative (I never knew there was so much to learn about egg whites!) and really hands on. So yes, that means I played a part in making every single one of the delicious macarons I took home + indulged in last night and this morning.

I’m not 100 percent confident I could make macarons by myself at home (at least not the first couple of times), but it doesn’t mean I’m not going to give it a shot! Another thing I can’t wait to try out? All of the amazing beauty products I got to take home after the macaron-making class!

Have you ever made your own macarons? If so, what’s your best tip for churning out the cutest + sweetest treats possible?

Work It

For some people, getting dressed up for work is one of the worst parts of going into an office every day. I, on the other hand, absolutely love it (unless I stayed up too late the night before and want nothing more than to hit my snooze button at least 20 times). And though I sometimes just throw on a pair of tailored trousers, a crisp button down and some basic pumps, I typically try to dress it up a little more with a cute + classy dress and a great pair of heels.

Take this ensemble, for example. I love the steely blue hue of the cowl-neck dress, and its classic structure is something I really look for in work wear. Paired with my new python-print, ankle-strap pumps (which I can already tell are going to be a staple in my wardrobe) and a classic leather clutch, it’s a simple outfit that’s just dressy enough for a day at the office.

Ballet-Inspired Style

Growing up a dancer, I walked around in tights, leotards, ballet buns and stage makeup more than I would care to admit. And though I quickly tired of it as a young girl + teenager, I’ve come to really love delicate, feminine and sophisticated ballet-inspired style as I get older (I’m evening sporting a sleek ballet bun right this moment!).

That’s why I’m super excited that dancers and their amazing sense of style are getting a ton of attention right now in the fashion world, starring in campaigns for Under Armour and VPL, among others.

Coney Island

How is the weekend already over?! I had a really great one, spending some quality time with my mom and Harrison before finally catching up on a quickly growing pile of work I had been neglecting.

On Friday, my mom and I took the train out to Coney Island for the very first time, and we couldn’t have had more fun. The trip itself was pretty simple—just an hour each way—and the beach was absolutely beautiful. So beautiful, in fact, that I immediately started kicking myself for not making a trip out to this part of Brooklyn before now.

In any case, we spent a few hours walking along the beach and the pier, exploring all of the cool rides and shops, and having a few drink at Ruby’s. (I somehow resisted eating a Nathan’s hot dog, but I know it will be the first thing I devour the next time I head out to Coney Island.) For my beachside day, I threw on a basic outfit featuring my favorite summer sun hat, a casual black tank, some white embroidered shorts and a few classic accessories.

It’s only been three days since our adventures on Coney Island, but I’m already planning for the next trip, which will definitely involve a bit more beach time (and, gasp, maybe even a bathing suit!).

Friday Four

Happy, happy Friday, everyone! Mom and I are heading off to Coney Island today (our planned trip for last weekend got postponed), and I’m really excited to finally explore all the destination has to offer (and yes, that includes hot dogs!). Tomorrow kicks off some birthday activities, though I’ll probably keep it pretty low key with a nice brunch and a little shopping.

But before the festivities begin, let’s take a look at everything I’m wanting to eat, live with, wear and visit this week:

food, cooking, baking, dessert, cake, cake recipe, turtle cake, turtle caramel cake recipe, decor, home decor, coffee table books, books, dogs, new york, the new york dog, fashion, style, accessories, jewelry, statement jewelry, statement necklace, baublebar, travel, niagara falls, nature

Eat: Chocolate Turtle Cake (recipe via The Cake Blog)

Not that I need an entire cake for my birthday (because seriously, I would eat it all), but I certainly wouldn’t turn down something that looks this delicious and indulgent.

Live With: The New York Dog by Rachael Hale McKenna

Filled with page after page of adorable pooches in and around the city of New York, this book could not be any cuter. So naturally, I need it on my coffee table ASAP.

Wear: Statement necklace by BaubleBar

This isn’t a new phenomenon or anything, but BaubleBar has really been killing it lately with its gorgeous jewels—especially when it comes to the brand’s stunning statement necklaces. I’ll take one of each, please!

Visit: Niagara Falls

I’ve been itching to take a little weekend trip for a while now, and I’m leaning more and more toward the idea of heading up north to check out the beauty that is Niagara Falls. Have you ever been before?

What are you loving this week?

Underneath It All

Today, I’m going to talk about something I’ve never talked about before on Life in Classics: Intimates. And why, you may ask? Because today is National Underwear Day, of course! (Seriously, there’s a holiday for everything these days… )

And because no outfit can truly be amazing without a really great foundation, I thought I’d do you a favor and round up a little list of intimates that are both sweet + sexy. Enjoy!

What girl can resist a pretty lace bra in a gorgeous hue? Certainly not this one! Which is why I absolutely adore the pieces from L’Agent by Agent Provocateur, Mimi Holliday, H&M and Huit. And when it comes to your basic black, you can’t go wrong with the strapless version from Agent Provocateur or the sheer-paneled push up from La Perla.

I’m also loving the lace briefs from Agent Provocateur, Stella McCartney and Mimi Holliday, and it doesn’t get much sexier than a sheer thong from La Perla.
